In San Jose, California, the California Theatre has remained a permanent fixture in the city for more than 80 years. Opening in 1927, it remained vacant for several years after it closed in 1975. It was resurrected and restored more than two decades later in 2004 as a performing arts venue. It has since become the home of the Symphony Silicon Valley and annually hosts the Cinequest Film Festival.
There are major plans in the works for the five-story California Theatre, which will be undergoing renovations sometime during the middle of next year. These renovations will happen simultaneously with the introduction of a 20-story hotel with 200 rooms set to be built above the theater, a project which is expected to happen while the theater is undergoing its improvements which include rebuilding the iconic entrance of the building as an interior feature, becoming a part of a new lobby designed in glass.
Upon completion, the hotel will include several amenities including a bar and restaurant on the rooftop, a spa and fitness center, and a ballroom spanning over 6,000 square feet, intended to complement the neighboring 20,000 square foot event facility.
Both projects are expected to start in mid-2016. Barring any unforeseen circumstances the new hotel and the California Theatre should be reopening in 2018.
