Watch out for Those Resort Fees

resortFeeAirlines receive a lot of criticism for the multiple fees they charge customers, but they’re hardly alone when it comes to extra travel fees. When staying a hotel, you’ve probably noticed extra fees being charged for things like parking, a “resort fee”, and even Internet in some cases. Unfortunately, these fees don’t seem to be going anywhere.

In cities like Scottsdale and Phoenix that maintain a strong vacation appeal, several resorts have actually increased their resort fee. A resort fee is a mandatory charge separate from the room rate that’s still relatively new in the industry, Instead of nickel-and-diming guests for separate charges to use services like the Wi-Fi, the resort fee covers most of these things.

While resort fees provide travelers a good deal according to hotels, in some cases these perks are including amenities that guests have come to expect as standard, like the pool. For example, a new Scottsdale resort charges a $39 resort fee that includes the use of amenities like fire pits, golf concierge, and pool activities.

Trying to find exactly what these resort fees cover on the hotel website is sometimes easier said than done, often requiring a phone call. Be sure to take some time to figure these out before booking your stay to avoid any unwanted surprises.

It’s Like Summer Camp All over Again at These Hotels

summerCampDid your parents ever send you to summer camp? If so, you may have fond memories of all the highs and lows that came with it. Campfires, singing songs, swimming, dealing with mosquitoes. Sometimes there is nothing quite like reliving those innocent days, and some hotels are already doing their part to try and emulate some of those experiences.

The Lodge at Sea Island provides a summer camp experience along with a tinge of history. The lodge itself looks like a hunting lodge and there are plenty of activities to enjoy. There is a screened-in recreational area complete with brick flooring, a fireplace burning wood, and plenty of picnic tables. If that doesn’t satisfy you, the Water Sports Center includes paddleboards, kayaks, and sailboats. Head outside when the night arrives and relax by the fire pit. Once it’s bedtime, a butler will bring you a good old-fashioned plate of milk and cookies to end the night.

For those seeking an escape, upstate New York’s Catskills are perfect for becoming one with nature. In the Catskills, you’ll find The Graham & Co., a property located near the town of Phoenicia. Enjoy tubing and hiking, borrow a bike, relax on bean bags, it truly is an escape.

Adventure Suites in North Conway has over fifteen suites each boasting a unique theme, including a log cabin complete with log furniture. A massive lawn and patio are home to a stone fireplace and it’s not unusual for guests to prepare s’mores during the summer.

Would You Go Without Housekeeping?

housekeepingA greater number of hotels are going the extra mile to become more environmentally friendly. Smart air conditioners, low flow showerheads, these are just two examples of eco-friendly hotel initiatives. Research shows more than sixty percent of world travelers have an interest in “green friendly” accommodations, yet these programs are still very low on the totem pole in importance. Perhaps unsurprisingly, travelers are more concerned with getting a great deal.

With that in mind, hotels are spearheading new ideas centered around offering guests perks and incentives for thinking about the environment. For example, several hotels operated by Provenance Hotels have what’s called a “Green for Green” program. This program encourages guests staying multiple nights to forego housekeeping services. In exchange, they’ll receive a credit that can be used towards a drink, beverage, or hotel food.

Several other hotels also have similar incentives. A Lake Placid-based hotel allows guests the option of having the $5 donated to an organization centered around Lake Placid cleanup efforts. A pair of hotels in California have a program where a tree is planted in honor of each guest that opts out of housekeeping.

How much importance do you place on choosing an environmentally friendly hotel when making travel plans? Would these programs sway your decision?

Book Your Luxury Hotel Stay by the Minute

hotelStayA luxury hotel is not something one would book by the hour, especially if it’s last minute. With the ongoing strides towards making hotels more technology savvy and allowing guests additional options, a new app is looking to rewrite the rules.

Launched last year, Recharge is a free app that allows its users to book high-end hotels the same day and by the minute. The way it works is simple. The user searches for the hotel closest to them and hits the button to “book now”. The app will start billing the user upon check-in or thirty minutes after hitting the button if they have yet to check in. The user is then free to spend as much time as they want or need in the room until they’re ready to hit the “check out” button and leave. The user is then billed for the exact number of minutes they spent in the room plus any applicable lodging tax, which varies based on the state.

If you want to re-energize with a quick power nap, paying about $30 with Recharge versus $400+ for an entire night makes a lot of sense. The unique approach is also great not only for napping but also for business travelers or even new moms looking for a private place to nurse. Hotels also win thanks to better occupancy levels.

Recharge launched in San Francisco and recently expanded into New York and the northern area of California. It is available for Android and iOS devices.

Hotel Amenities for Pets

petFriendlyFor pet owners, going on vacation often means having to make the difficult decision of taking the four-legged members of the family along or making other arrangements. Hotels are increasingly recognizing the potential to increase occupancy by being pet-friendly, and some of them are taking major steps to provide unique amenities.

Loews Hotels and Resorts has a Loews Loves Pets program. Upon arrival, pets receive a bakery made treat. When it’s time to order room service, humans eat along with their pet by choosing from a dog or cat-friendly gourmet menu. A hotel in Denver provides bacon-flavored water, another one in San Diego has a “Yappy Hour” on Sundays, while a Manhattan-based hotel provides chef prepared pet-friendly meals.

It’s not all about food. A Vermont-based resort will pamper your pooch with “Rover Reiki” or a massage and there are plans to also open a pet-friendly tennis court this summer. In Miami Beach, a hotel offers “Pamper with Pooch” spa treatments where owners and their pets receive side-by-side massages in an outdoor cabana near the ocean.

Would you feel more inclined to stay at a hotel or resort and travel more often if it provided pet-friendly amenities? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Fun-Filled Hotels and Resorts

laplayaSometimes, staying at a hotel can be just as much fun as the vacation destination. Although they’re generally reserved for providing a comfortable and private place to sleep, there are several places that may be just as fun as the place you’ll be vacationing in.

For those that appreciate The Great Outdoors, Montage Deer Valley in Park City, Utah is like a winter paradise. Go skiing, snowboarding, gather around the campfire for some signature marshmallows, go hiking, there are numerous options. For those that would rather not deal with nature too much, there are yoga lessons, bowling activities, and more than five on-site restaurants to dine at.

Right here in Florida, La Playa Beach & Golf Resort is an experience located directly on the beach. Unlike resorts that force you to pay more for the best views, every guest room in the resort provides a view of the Gulf. If golfing isn’t your thing, you can always spend the day relaxing in a poolside cabana or pamper yourself at the on-site spa.

No list would be complete without mentioning Hawaii. The Sheraton Waikiki comes with amenities like an infinity-edge pool, water slides and interactive fountains for the kids, and much more. As a complement to Hawaii’s numerous sights and activities, it’s a fantastic choice.

Alexa and Siri Are on Their Way to Your Hotel Room

siriSucksIf you’re an iPhone user or have ever used one of the Amazon Echo devices, chances are you’re familiar with Siri and Alexa, respectively. Both of these technologies work as personal assistants designed to answer questions, schedule tasks, and make life easier.

While Siri and Alexa have been relegated to phones, tablets, and speakers, one of the largest hotel chains in the world is already taking the steps to use them in their hotel. The Marriott brand is currently using its Aloft brand of hotels to test Apple’s Siri. If all goes according to plan, these intelligent assistants would allow guests to issue commands such as turning the lights on and off, adjusting the temperature, or controlling the television. As for Alexa, guests would be able to use it more for answering questions, such as events in the local area.

Currently, Alexa and Siri are being tested in just a handful of rooms, but there are plans to expand to more Aloft hotels as well Marriott’s other brands. There are no immediate plans to also implement Google’s voice assistant currently found on Android devices.

How do you feel about potentially having Alexa and Siri in your hotel room? Are you concerned about privacy issues or are you excited? Let us know in the comments!

Save Money When Booking Hotels

hotelSavingsThe costs involved in travel are one of the many reasons why people choose to put it off. Gas, airfare, hotels, all of these can quickly put a dent in your wallet. Speaking of hotels, unless you plan on staying with friends or family you’re going to need a hotel, and these tips could help you save a few bucks,

If you decide to directly contact the hotel to book your stay, be mindful of how you ask for rates. Instead of asking for the best deal, ask the person you’re speaking to for the lowest rate that’s non-refundable. You’re essentially saying the same thing, but you have improved odds of actually receiving the best rate available.

Inquire about discounts. If you’re a member of AARP or AAA, you may be able to snag a room or at least few perks at a discount. AAA members may be eligible to save up to fifty percent at certain hotel chains, so it’s definitely worth looking into.

Did you know hotel websites often track your browsing behavior? This can be a problem as many of them will change the price. Let’s say you’re planning a trip for the summer. You decide to check out rates to get an idea of what the asking price is, only to return the next day or so and realize it’s gone up dramatically. You can combat this by clearing your browser cookies or making sure to visit hotel websites using your browser’s private mode.

Facebook Debuts City Guides

heyFacebookWhether or not you use Facebook, you probably have some degree of familiarity with just how popular and massive its user base is, over a billion active users in fact. With many people using it on a daily basis, it’s ripe for businesses to reach out to clients, and hotels are among the latest to benefit from it.

If you frequently use the Facebook app, you may have noticed a new change pop up. The company quietly added a hotel booking feature called City Guides that allows users to easily browse through hotels as well as local attractions, eateries, and tours. As users browse these guides, they may notice buttons that allow them to directly message or call the business or they can book their stay/reservation directly through the app.

Depending on how long you’ve used the Facebook app, you may have already noticed features similar to this, such as the direct Uber booking. City Guides is the latest addition and seemingly aims to compete with Google’s Trips app. Unlike with Google, Facebook’s gargantuan data allows it a more social aspect and arguably an advantage with its massive number of users. Users can view additional information on places that their friends and family have visited before including reviews, pictures, and more.
