Millennials Want Fitness-Minded Hotel Amenities

hotelFitnessWhen choosing a hotel to stay at, how much emphasis do you place on its fitness facilities? If you happen to know a millennial or be one, it may be more important than you think. According to a survey released last year, close to half of millennials said that a fitness facility with classes available for use on or off-site is essential when determining their choice of hotel. This is in stark contrast to baby boomers and people falling under the category of Generation X.

In response to millennials, hotels have been making changes to address these demands. Over eighty percent of hotels upped their amenities with a fitness facility last year, an increase of more than sixty percent when compared to 2004. Some chains are taking things a step further by not only offering fitness facilities but also amenities centered around health and wellness. These amenities include a workout clothing laundry service, on-site personal trainers, and much more.

If you’re a millennial, how important is it for the hotel you choose to stay at to have fitness-minded amenities and features? Let us know in the comments!

The wildly successful Faena Hotel in Miami Beach is a five-star newcomer. Located in the Mid-Beach area, the hotel occupies the former home of the Saxony Hotel and has quickly become one of the most popular places to stay in the barrier island.

Just south of the Acqualina is the St Regis Bal Harbour making its fourth straight appearance. A little further south in Miami Beach is The Setai, which received five stars and is making its third straight appearance in the Forbes list.

Stay at Your next Hotel for Hours Versus Nights

checkInFor decades, hotels have operated by having a certain check-in and check-out time. If you’re a heavy traveler frequently dealing with red-eye flights or delays, these times can become frustrating if for example, you arrive much sooner than you anticipated. As You Stay is an app that aims to fix that situation by breaking from convention and allowing you to book a stay for hours versus nights.

Here’s a scenario: you arrive at your destination at 5 am but you won’t be able to check until 3 pm. In most cases, you would pay for the previous day and waste money or simply figure out how to use your time while you wait. With As You Stay, the rates are based on how long you plan on staying in terms of hours so that you don’t need to worry about those pesky check-in and check-out times.

If you’ve ever used the app HotelTonight, the As You Stay interface will look very familiar. Choose where you plan to stay, your dates and the timeframe, and the app will pull hotels that meet the criteria while displaying the total cost. Tapping on a hotel will reveal additional details such as amenities and useful maps.

As You Stay is available for Android and iOS devices.

Hotel Room Keycards and Hackers

hotelKeycardsYou may have heard about a rather alarming news story that’s been circulating involving a four-star hotel in Austria having its electronic key system hijacked. Guests were allegedly locked in their hotel rooms by hackers until a ransom was paid. Because of the hack, the hotel managers decided to go back to basics and switched to the old-fashioned key system.

While the story is certainly alarming, it’s not entirely accurate.

Like many of the things you read on the Internet, a grain of salt is necessary. While the hotel did have its electronic key system hacked, the attack only meant that guests checking in that day were unable to receive keycards because they could not be programmed. In other words, the keycards and the computers that programmed them were affected. There was never a moment when guests were locked in their rooms because the doors remain unaffected.

In most cases, hotels already have a failsafe in place should a situation arise where guests are unable to get in and out of their hotel rooms. The fact that the hotel was hacked is certainly alarming, but you don’t necessarily need to worry that someone will be able to lock you in a room remotely.

Remember to always do your research and check multiple sources.

Find out More About Hotel Amenities with Google Maps

gMapsFor most people that use electronic devices to book their hotel stay, the search tends to begin on a popular booking site like Expedia or a popular app like HotelTonight. Did you know that your navigation app can also provide hotel information?

Google Maps is already known for its detailed information on businesses, including pictures provided by users or Google itself. If you’re planning on a hotel stay and want to research the area, the app is very useful for getting an idea of what you can expect. To give you an even better idea of what the experience will be like, Google Maps is taking things a step further by not just telling you what the amenities are, but also showing you.

It may take a while before it shows up for you, but you’ll soon see pictures under the Amenities tab when researching hotels in Google Maps. These images don’t appear to be user-submitted yet, but it should only be a matter of time before the feature is enabled so you can determine whether that pool really is as large as it looks on the hotel website.

To use the new amenities feature in Google Maps, make sure you have the latest version of the app on your phone.

More Technology, Less Extras in Today’s Hotels

hotelfancytechFor those that frequently travel, there is some good news to report. A greater number of hotels are throwing in extra perks at no additional charge. Some of these include complimentary Wi-Fi, parking, and even breakfast. However, even as more freebies are offered, some of the tried and true extras are becoming a thing of the past. Room service, swimming pools, and minibars are a few examples of extras that are disappearing.

An online survey commissioned by the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows that of the more than 7,000 hotels in the United States, over 97 percent of them offer in-room Wi-Fi, and less than ten percent of them charge for it. Typically, luxury hotels are the ones that choose to charge, while mid-range and economy hotels have lower odds of requiring a fee.

The online survey also revealed additional interesting details. More hotel rooms have HD capable television sets, up from 84 percent to nearly 90 percent and there are more non-smoking rooms, jumping from 62 percent in 2014 to a whopping 85 percent. Conversely, the number of hotels that install minibars in the room has dropped to just three percent, and only 43 percent of hotels are choosing to include a swimming pool.

Where do you think the hotel industry is headed as it begins to offer more modern technology features while doing away with classic extras?

More Hotel Brands Aim to Add Fitness Programs

g5zixjzrgds-markus-spiskeWith the New Year soon to arrive, many people will be making resolutions and one of the most common is getting fit and eating healthier. With these goals in mind, hotels tend to offer packages centered around nutrition and fitness to appeal to guests during the beginning of the year. These packages are typically available for a limited time, but that may be changing soon as the hotel industry realizes how health conscious its guests are.

In response to the increase in guests seeking fitness minded accommodations, the Westin is launching fitness programs at several of its hotels. These programs will include activities such as cross fit, yoga, guided runs, and even classes on juicing. Interestingly, these activities will not cost guests any extra money aside from what they would pay for their nightly accommodations with the packages already included.

Westin is not the only brand of hotels looking for ways to ensure its guests stay healthy. The Edition Hotels is joining forces with a collective called Yoga for Bad People that will allow guests to enjoy a trio of free on demand yoga videos available through the televisions inside the hotel room.

The two brands are among many around the world aiming to take a more health-minded approach. How important is it for you to be able to remain active when you’re staying at a hotel for business or leisure purposes?

Is Smartphone Keyless Entry the Future?

smartphone

In the past, hotels used keys for their rooms. Nowadays, it’s common to receive a plastic card as your room key. As more people have begun depending on their smartphone as a tool, the idea of using it as a room key doesn’t seem quite as far fetched. In fact, two of the largest hotel operators in the country are aiming to more than double the number of properties allowing smartphone keyless entry.

When 2016 is over in a couple of days, Hilton Worldwide will have over 650 hotels keyless entry hotels around the world, including Canada and Singapore. That number is a substantial increase from just 91 in the beginning of the year. The other operator is Marriott International, which currently has just over 200 keyless entry hotels. By the time 2017 draws to a close, Hilton is expected to have 2,000+ hotels with keyless entry rooms. At least for Hilton, the feature appears to be limited to its loyalty club members.

The way the keyless entry works is simple. The guest receives a special code that can be used in the loyalty club app. With the app open, the person only needs to hold the phone near the door lock to unlock it. The feature also potentially removes the need to even check in the lobby prior to heading to the room.
