Driving through Collins Park, you may have noticed a collection of seven seemingly abandoned buildings not far from the Miami Beach Convention Center. Although they’ve been empty for some time now, and most were subject to extensive fire damage, there have been plans in the works to do something with them ever since New York-based development firm The Chetrit Group received the okay in 2012 for a $55 million loan intended to refashion Collins Park into a hotel. Four years later, plans are finally moving towards the creation of the appropriately named Collins Park Hotel complex.
The Collins Park Hotel is expected to have about 300 rooms with the renowned firm of Kobi Karp as the architect. Kobi Karp has spearheaded or contributed to several projects throughout South Florida, including the Paramount Bay condominium in Miami and Bel Aire on the Ocean, also in the barrier island of Miami Beach. The Chetrit Group has already earned itself a sterling reputation after receiving much acclaim with the successful redevelopment of the Tides Hotel.
Anyone concerned that Collins Park will lose its classic charm should rest assured that the plans for Collins Park include a mix of infill additions and historic restorations that will maintain the Art Deco style the buildings had when they originally built between 1938 and 1953.
