Hotels Are Ditching the Desk

hotelRoomDeskWhen staying at a hotel, what items do you typically look for?  Are you the type that expects to find a desk that you can set your laptop on so you can get some work done?  You may be in for a surprise the next time you find yourself staying in a hotel room. Many hotels are choosing to eschew desks in favor of a minimalist look, citing younger travelers that prefer to get their work done in a hotel lobby where they can socialize and enjoy a sense of community.

The next hotel room you visit may include laminate flooring instead of the typical carpet, a glass shower instead of a tub, and oversized TV trays in place of the typical desk.  These new rooms are what’s being dubbed “flexible workspaces” and hotels hope that if the environment is not conducive towards productivity, guests might feel inclined to visit the lobby and perhaps spend some money on a drink or snack while they get their work done.

While the changes may appeal to a younger crowd, seasoned travelers may find that these new rooms provide little space to comfortably get work done.  Also, many travelers that need to get work done prefer the privacy of their room to be productive and are not looking to socialize.

How do you feel about these changes?
