From “Hotel California” to “Heartbreak Hotel” and plenty more, hotels have long been the inspiration for some of the most classic songs in history. There are names that are instantly recognizable regardless of whether you’ve stayed there and today we’d like to take a look at some of the ones that have served as musical inspiration.
The Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro has been around since 1923 and remains a historic hotel with an Art Deco inspired design located just off of the beach. You may have heard the name “Copacabana” as part of the 1978 song of the same name by singer-songwriter Barry Manilow. Not surprisingly, the inspiration for the song came when Manilow stayed at the hotel.
Speaking of “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Hotel California”, these two classics are by Elvis Presley and The Eagles, respectively. “Heartbreak Hotel” was, somewhat unusually, based on the suicide of a man who jumped from his unnamed hotel window. The opening line of “I walk a lonely street” comes directly from the man’s suicide note. As for “Hotel California”, it is strongly believed that the song is based on The Beverly Hills Hotel, but the band has never revealed its origins.
The Holiday Inn has been name checked or served as the inspiration for a countless number of songs, including the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight”, Chingy’s “Holidae In”, and plenty of others.
