Would You Book a Hotel Without Knowing Its Name?

mysteryHotelIt takes a great deal of courage to pack your bags and travel to an unknown location, especially if that location also happens to include a hotel that you don’t even know the name of. It may sound a little crazy, but that’s the idea behind Staydilly.

Launched in October of last year, Staydilly is a hotel booking platform that assists travelers with finding discounted rates at hotels with a rating of at least three stars or more. The catch is you won’t know the name of the hotel you’ll be staying at until after you booked your reservation. Despite this, guests can still see high quality images of the hotel. The platform allows a greater separation between travelers seeking a premium hotel experience for a great value with those that are loyal to a certain brand and prefer to book directly.

Staydilly aims to address the common problem of rooms that are left vacant. Generally, a hotel will heavily discount the rates for these rooms that remain unsold in an effort to book them.

For the time being, Staydilly has yet to arrive in the United States or even North America for that matter. Its list of cities is relegated largely to Southeast Asia with future plans to expand into Australia.

More Technology, Less Extras in Today’s Hotels

hotelfancytechFor those that frequently travel, there is some good news to report. A greater number of hotels are throwing in extra perks at no additional charge. Some of these include complimentary Wi-Fi, parking, and even breakfast. However, even as more freebies are offered, some of the tried and true extras are becoming a thing of the past. Room service, swimming pools, and minibars are a few examples of extras that are disappearing.

An online survey commissioned by the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows that of the more than 7,000 hotels in the United States, over 97 percent of them offer in-room Wi-Fi, and less than ten percent of them charge for it. Typically, luxury hotels are the ones that choose to charge, while mid-range and economy hotels have lower odds of requiring a fee.

The online survey also revealed additional interesting details. More hotel rooms have HD capable television sets, up from 84 percent to nearly 90 percent and there are more non-smoking rooms, jumping from 62 percent in 2014 to a whopping 85 percent. Conversely, the number of hotels that install minibars in the room has dropped to just three percent, and only 43 percent of hotels are choosing to include a swimming pool.

Where do you think the hotel industry is headed as it begins to offer more modern technology features while doing away with classic extras?

More Hotel Brands Aim to Add Fitness Programs

g5zixjzrgds-markus-spiskeWith the New Year soon to arrive, many people will be making resolutions and one of the most common is getting fit and eating healthier. With these goals in mind, hotels tend to offer packages centered around nutrition and fitness to appeal to guests during the beginning of the year. These packages are typically available for a limited time, but that may be changing soon as the hotel industry realizes how health conscious its guests are.

In response to the increase in guests seeking fitness minded accommodations, the Westin is launching fitness programs at several of its hotels. These programs will include activities such as cross fit, yoga, guided runs, and even classes on juicing. Interestingly, these activities will not cost guests any extra money aside from what they would pay for their nightly accommodations with the packages already included.

Westin is not the only brand of hotels looking for ways to ensure its guests stay healthy. The Edition Hotels is joining forces with a collective called Yoga for Bad People that will allow guests to enjoy a trio of free on demand yoga videos available through the televisions inside the hotel room.

The two brands are among many around the world aiming to take a more health-minded approach. How important is it for you to be able to remain active when you’re staying at a hotel for business or leisure purposes?

Is Smartphone Keyless Entry the Future?

smartphone

In the past, hotels used keys for their rooms. Nowadays, it’s common to receive a plastic card as your room key. As more people have begun depending on their smartphone as a tool, the idea of using it as a room key doesn’t seem quite as far fetched. In fact, two of the largest hotel operators in the country are aiming to more than double the number of properties allowing smartphone keyless entry.

When 2016 is over in a couple of days, Hilton Worldwide will have over 650 hotels keyless entry hotels around the world, including Canada and Singapore. That number is a substantial increase from just 91 in the beginning of the year. The other operator is Marriott International, which currently has just over 200 keyless entry hotels. By the time 2017 draws to a close, Hilton is expected to have 2,000+ hotels with keyless entry rooms. At least for Hilton, the feature appears to be limited to its loyalty club members.

The way the keyless entry works is simple. The guest receives a special code that can be used in the loyalty club app. With the app open, the person only needs to hold the phone near the door lock to unlock it. The feature also potentially removes the need to even check in the lobby prior to heading to the room.

Hotels Seek to Adopt Geolocation

hotelstayIf you have a modern smartphone, you’ve probably passed by or walked into a store only to have your smartphone detect where you are and notify you with offers. The technology behind this is called geolocation, and it seems hotels are increasingly following in the footsteps of retailers and major chains like Marriott and Hilton.

Per a recent survey, over seventy percent of hotels and resorts are laying the groundwork to implement geolocation technology in 2017, as Marriott and Hilton have already done. More and more hoteliers are seeking to further personalize the experience and do a better job of recognizing its guests, as these factors can affect the bottom line.

Some of the intended uses for geolocation according to the survey will likely involve assisting with check-in, offering discounts or coupons, tracking what facilities are being used, allowing mobile payments, and more. The tracking intentions have raised eyebrows as more than fifty percent of survey respondents have expressed concern about having their movements and location tracked. However, over seventy percent say they are willing to share some personal information if it means receiving customized promotions.

While the intentions behind geolocation may seem like a good idea, hotels should also be mindful that they don’t overdo it with promotions and how they utilize the information gathered from their guests.

Say Goodbye to the Customary Hotel Bible

labibliaFor decades, if not centuries, it’s been typical to see the Bible tucked away inside one of the drawers of whatever furniture may be in a hotel room. However, this longtime hotel staple is now disappearing, and it’s all thanks to millennials.

Marriott, which runs the millennial-centric Moxy and Edition hotel brands has chosen not to stock religious books—the Bible or otherwise—at these hotels. In fact, recent research shows that the percentage of hotels offering religious materials in their rooms has plummeted dramatically during the last decade, from nearly 100 percent in 2006 to less than 50 percent this year.

As to why the Bible is disappearing, it seems to be an effort to appeal to younger travelers, many of which are not as religious as their parents. Many hotels are also choosing not to potentially offend guests that may have a different faith. With some hotels choosing to forego nightstands with drawers altogether in favor of shelves, keeping the Bible in a discreet spot also becomes a bigger issue.

For guests staying at a Marriott brand like Courtyard or Fairfield, these hotels will still stick to the longtime tradition and include the famous book in its rooms.

Lifestyle Hotels Are on the Rise

In the past, you would go to the hotel gym. Pretty soon, you’ll be able to go to the gym hotel. Confused? It’s not as strange as it may sound. The popular Equinox gym will soon be unveiling its own hotel of sorts in New York and it’s not the only major name opening what’s called a “lifestyle hotel”. Retail store West Elm also has plans in the works to unveil its own hotel within the South and Midwest areas of the country in 2018.

These new branded hotels aim to appeal to core customers that are already familiar with the brand in question. The familiarity means the hotel already has a potential customer base and solid following without having to start from scratch.

Before Equinox decided to launch a namesake hotel, the company ran the idea by its customers and determined that over ninety percent of them would be interested in staying at a branded hotel. The first of these will be a 72-story mixed use building opening in New York’s Hudson Yards. Besides Equinox fans, Equinox is also looking to attract affluent guests.

What do you think of these branded lifestyle hotels? Would you choose a stay at one of these hotels over a traditional hotel brand such as Marriott?
